There are several versions of the text of the Second Amendment, each with slight capitalization and punctuation differences, found in the official documents surrounding the adoption of the Bill of Rights. One such version was passed by the Congress, which reads:  “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”  Another version is found in the copies distributed to the states, and then ratified by them, which had this capitalization and punctuation: “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”  The original hand-written copy of the Bill of Rights, approved by the House and Senate, was prepared by scribe William Lambert and resides in the National Archives.   The Second Amendment was adopted on December 15, 1791, along with the rest of the Bill of Rights.

Having been introduced to firearms by his father, Michael Nelson, has learned about firearms, the safety involved with their storage and use and the ammunition for firearms, from a young age.  His father an avid outdoorsman and hunter is also a Life-Time member of the National Rifle Association.  The Mission of the National Rifle Association (N.R.A.) is:   "To protect the Second Amendment right to bear arms, and to promote safe, responsible, and competent use of firearms."  In 1871, by a group of Union veterans of the American Civil War. The first NRA president was Ambrose Burnside; the eighth, Ulysses S. Grant.  The NRA is made up of some 4.3 million members and has chapters throughout the country. Over 1,000 NRA-licensed firearms instructors train individuals on firearm use, while the NRA's considerable staff wields an astonishing amount of lobbying power.  The NRA, the oldest and largest civil liberties organization in the United States, promotes the Founding Fathers' vision of a citizenry that both owns guns and uses them responsibly.

Order of the Arrow - Boy Scouts of America (Brotherhood Member) - Lifetime Member

www.OA-BSA.org - Scouting's National Honor Society

The purpose of the Order of the Arrow as Scouting's National Honor Society is fourfold:
1.)  To recognize those Scout campers who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives
2.)  To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit
     3.)  To promote Scout camping
4.)  To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others

The Order of the Arrow (OA) was founded by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson in 1915 at the Treasure Island Camp of the Philadelphia Council, Boy Scouts of America. It became an official program experiment in 1922 and was approved as part of the Scouting program in 1934.  In 1948 the OA, recognized as the BSA's national brotherhood of honor campers, became an official part of the national camping program of the Boy Scouts of America.

The OA has more than 176,000 members located in lodges affiliated with approximately 327 BSA local councils.

Scouts are elected to the Order by their fellow unit members, following approval by the Scoutmaster.  To become a member, a youth must be a registered member of a Boy Scout troop and hold First Class rank. The candidate must have experienced fifteen days and nights of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to the election. The fifteen days and nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The balance of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps.   The induction ceremony, called the Ordeal, is the first step toward full membership.  During the experience, candidates maintain silence, receive small amounts of food, work on camp improvement projects, and are required to sleep alone, apart from other campers.  The entire experience is designed to teach significant values.
Brotherhood Membership = After at least 1 year of service and fulfilling certain requirements, a member may take part in the Brotherhood ceremony, which places further emphasis on the ideals of Scouting and the Order. Completion of this ceremony signifies full membership in the OA. Active and continual membership in the Boy Scouts of America continues a persons life-time membership in the Order of the Arrow.

The Order of the Arrow has been a strong part of the Scouting program for over 90 years.

Nelson became a member of the Order of the Arrow, while a Boy Scout with Troop 126, in Franklin, MA.  Completing Ordeal at Camp Squanto BSA Summer Camp in Massachusetts and Brotherhood a few years later.
